Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service are offering FREE home fire safety visits to support the most at-risk members of the community, aimed at helping you reduce fire risk and stay safe at home. Hazards will be identified, practical advice will be offered, and free smoke detectors or other equipment will be supplied, if needed.
Why have a home fire safety visit?
In 2025, Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service reported:
- 4 fire-related fatalities
- 37 injuries from domestic property fires
All 4 fatalities involved individuals who were:
- were over 65 years of age
- lived alone
- smoked
- used emollient creams

Are you eligible?
You may qualify for a free home fire safety visit if you or someone you know meets one or more of the following risk factors:
- mental health or memory related conditions
- poor housekeeping or blocked exits
- alcohol use
- drug use – including illegal or prescription medications
- smoking habits
- limited mobility – including equipment, such as mobility scooters
- living alone – especially over the age of 65
- no working or properly placed smoke detectors.
